The camp of Mittelbau-Dora and the rockets V2

Following the bombardment of the Peenemünde research center in August 1943, Hitler decided to transfer the production of V2 rockets to an underground site with the exclusive use of concentration camp labor. The place becomes the Kommando Dora, placed under the authority of the SS with the complicity of scientists. Thousands of prisoners of all nationalities are sent there to set up the factory. Mittelwerk, intended for assembly of the missile. It is “Dora’s hell”, one of the deadliest places in the Nazi concentration camp system.

Of an exceptional size and weighing more than four kilos, this book is a real paper tomb. 8,971 lives are gathered there. Twenty-two years after the commitment made to the Center d’Histoire de The dome (Pas-de-Calais) with the survivors of Dora, the objective has finally been reached. Fruit of the mobilization without previous historians, professors, archivists, volunteers, the recovery of thousands of archives, this work fixes on paper the history of an entire section of the deportation in all its , its diversity, its complexity and its multiple.

During this day, a numbered copy of the book will be given by the Cherche-Midi Editeur to the families of the Haut-Garonnais deportees who passed through the DORA camp.
